Frame Drum Ensemble Course with Murat Coskun

Start: Thursday, 25.03.2027, 18.00h - arrival, warm up, session
End: Sunday, 28.03.2026, 17.30h
(20h Workshop presentation, about 60 min)

In this multi-day workshop, I’d like to help you experience the versatility of frame drums and explore the groove miniatures I’ve developed, called “ANIMAL GROOVES”:

A wide variety of animals serve as inspiration for short rhythmic compositions that can be expanded in any way. Musical stories emerge that take shape through collaborative work, gain momentum, or prepare to take a big leap…

The workshop consists of both instrumental instruction and ensemble work. A key element is the simultaneous use of voice and drum.

ANIMAL GROOVES

Location: E-Werk, Freiburg im Breisgau (Germany)
Lecturers: Murat Coskun (course instructor) and co-teachers
Course fee: 250€/ 225€ (discounted)
Instrument: Frame Drums (also other percussion instruments, voice and/ or melodic instruments are welcome - Please request in advance!)

The Tamburi Mundi Ensemble Course offers the opportunity to immerse yourself deeply in music during the first four days of the festival. In large and small groups, pieces are arranged together and brought to life with frame drums and other instruments that the participants bring with them.

Participants benefit from the extensive methodological expertise of Murat Coşkun, a long-time frame drum teacher with his own teaching-style, head of the World Percussion Department at the Popakademie in Mannheim, and lecturer at the University of Music in Freiburg.
His humorous yet focused style motivates the participants and opens up new approaches to ensemble playing. At the same time, he works specifically on playing techniques and rhythms that form the foundation for playing together. His humorous yet focused style encourages participants and guides them as they take new steps on the frame drum.

The goal of our course is a public final presentation of our joint musical work on April 5, 2026. Here we will present the “workshop results” to each other. All participants will be integrated, i.e., spectators can participate just as much as the performing ensembles.

Online preparation phase in March 2027:

An online meeting will take place in early March to present the teaching material. This will give you the opportunity to familiarize yourself with the material in advance and clarify any questions you may have before the course. This will allow us to use the face-to-face event in Freiburg much more effectively.
This meeting will take place via Zoom and will be recorded. The recording of the meeting will then be made available to all participants.
Participation in this preparatory meeting is optional and not mandatory, but we recommend reviewing the material in advance and preparing yourself.

Course Language: English
Level: Intermediate = Good prior knowledge in playing frame drums
