The Tamburi Mundi Frame Drum Academy is a poven combination of in-person coaching in Freiburg (course location: University of Education, see below) and supplementary online lessons. This combination allows you to immerse yourself deeply in frame drumming while also practicing specific topics and clarifying current questions.
All online lessons are recorded and made available to you as videos for practice/ review.
Content of the lessons
The course focuses on the practical application of various frame drum instruments. Murat Coskun will give you lots of inspiration and help you develop your own individual playing style.
We work on the following topics:
- Enjoyment when playing and practicing with the frame drum
- How do I learn correctly?
- What do I want to learn?
- Solid mastery of important frame drum combinations, techniques, embellishments
- Different grooves
- Expanding the tonal spectrum (sounds, dynamics)
- Endurance when playing the frame drum
- Rhythm work and timing (including body percussion)
- Independence between hands and feet
- Combining the drum with your own voice
- Use of frame drums in different musical styles
- Frame drum arrangements, frame drum compositions, improvisation
- Advanced and innovative playing techniques
- Warm-up exercises and practical tips
- Notation
- Background knowledge about instruments, cultures of origin, etc.
- Combining frame drumming with your own creativity
- Making music together in an ensemble
In addition to the specified topics, you also have the opportunity to indicate your “preferred topics,” which may be taken into consideration.
The Lessons are primarily in groups, although individual instruction will also be offered occasionally.
The course materials (video/audio/notation) are available online. You will receive exercises and homework between the in-person weekends.
We will also meet online between the in-person weekends to keep the gaps between the sessions as short as possible, but also to review and prepare for the lessons.
The first year of the program ends with the final weekend, during which you will play prepared pieces with the other participants.
The seminar will take place with a minimum of 6 participants. The goal is to ensure group work while also offering individual support to all participants.

On-site classes in Freiburg (15 hours)
Accompanying online classes (4 hours)
regular homework checks, feedbacks, and personal coaching (2 hours) - "Special-Online-Day" (6 hrs.)
Additional accompanying online lessons to deepen the material - Final weekend in Freiburg (10 hours)
Rehearsal, voluntary exam, feedback, etc.
Total of 100 teaching hrs.

Participants /target group
The contents of our training units in the first year are primarily aimed at artistically and musically active and interested people as well as professional groups in the pedagogical environment, i.e. musicians working in the professional and semi-professional field, artists, actors, dancers, but also people interested in rhythm who want to integrate frame drumming into their work as well as teachers, pedagogues, group leaders, educators.
Requirements
- Good basic knowledge of the frame drum
- Knowledge of some basic rhythms (at least 4-6 rhythms)
- Basic knowledge of reading music and notation
- Sufficient coordination and flexibility
- Willingness to practise and deepen the contents in independent work.
Seminar Completion
Participants will receive a certificate of participation at the end of the year.
There is an option to take a final exam. In this case, participants will receive a certificate with a detailed list of the training content upon successful completion. Attendance at least 75% of the course is required.
Instruments
Instruments are provided free of charge and some can also be taken home for practice.

Frame drum basic course: 1400,- EUR // 1120,- EUR (reduced)
Accommodation and board costs are not included.

Course location, accomodation and meals
The course takes place in the premises of the Freiburg University of Education (Institute of Music). Participants are responsible for organising their own accommodation and meals. However, we can help you find suitable accommodation if necessary.
