20:00 A Journey to the World of Frame drum Music (final performance of the Tamburi Mundi ensemble course)
FREE ENTRANCE!!
Venue: E-Werk, Foyer
The Tamburi Mundi Ensemble Course presents its music!
For almost four days, professional musicians and international amateur musicians rehearsed, arranged, tried things out, and fine-tuned their performances under the direction of Murat Coşkun. In a final performance, they share with us all the special pieces that were created during this intensive collaboration: lively, creative, and spontaneous music in unusual combinations.
Murat Coşkun's ensemble work is supported by Yaschar Coşkun (frame drums) and Beatriz Picas (cello, vocals), who add their own accents with their musical ideas.
Every year, the Tamburi Mundi ensemble course offers the opportunity to immerse yourself deeply in music during the first days of the festival. In large and small groups, pieces are arranged together and brought to life with frame drums and other instruments that the participants bring with them. The framework is in place, and the picture is refreshingly repainted every year!

The 21st Tamburi Mundi Festival is opening!
The frame drum axis ‘New York-Freiburg’ is an important constant in the festival programme and an expression of great appreciation.
Nevertheless, this evening marks a first: for the first time, Freiburg-based world percussionist Murat Coşkun and multiple Grammy Award winner Glen Velez (USA) will be performing as a duo on stage.
It is an interplay between two frame drum masters whose playing combines intimacy, a love of improvisation and a passion for clear forms. They enjoy the moment, inspired by the moment and what the music of their counterpart tells them. In doing so, they rely on their intuition, let their instruments speak, but also draw on the familiar, on the experiences of numerous joint tours on which they have shared the stage. Indian, shamanic and Turkish-Arabic elements find expression in their compositions. Glen Velez's Mexican roots are just as noticeable as Murat Coşkun's connection to Turkish music.
This year's festival theme, ‘Simplicity’, serves as a guiding principle. Velez and Coşkun demonstrate the power, beauty, clarity, joie de vivre and also the appeal of ‘simplicity’, which people often long for. Even the more complex parts of their music are interwoven with a lightness that opens them up to the listener.
Two generations meet: Velez created a new genre of drumming with his very own performance style – inspired by years of studying percussion and frame drums from different cultures. His virtuoso playing and original compositional style, which incorporates drumming language and Central Asian overtone singing, have opened up new avenues for musicians around the world.
Murat Coşkun has learned a great deal from him and adopted essential elements for his own playing. Velez was an important guide for him, enabling the great frame drum vision ‘Tamburi Mundi’ to become a reality in Freiburg.

This concert evening gives space and time to two extraordinary musicians.
Nora Thiele is one of Europe's most versatile percussionists. She is an innovative frame drum pioneer with a profound knowledge of rhythm gained from years of studying the music of cultures around the world. She has been developing her own performance concepts for more than 20 years.
In her solo setup, she combines keyboard and percussion instruments to create a sound cosmos between acoustic and electronic sounds with world percussion, voice, rousing frame drum grooves, and atmospheric sounds. Tamburi Mundi shines the spotlight on an important voice in today's frame drum world.
Nora Thiele - frame drums, electronics, piano, voice
Claudio Spieler is an Austrian world percussionist whose musical heart beats for South Indian rhythms, Afro-Cuban music, and flamenco. He tours and performs at festivals from Havana to Reykjavik (with Konstantin Wecker, Martin Grubinger, Karen Lugo, Peter Madsen, David Helbock, and others).
Classical percussion, master student of Hakim Ludin, studies with kanjira master Selvaganesh Vinayakram—all of this has shaped him and made him the sensitive and incredibly impressive live performer he is today: his playing is subtle, humorous, imaginative, and above all virtuosic—with a pure joy in making music!

ANDREA PICCIONI “opening act”
MEDITERRANEAN ORCHESTRA
A world premiere dedicated to the Tamburi Mundi Festival: the Mediterranean Orchestra, born in the traditional music department of the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Nocera Terinesei, Italy.
The ensemble plays and arranges traditional music from the Mediterranean region, focusing on the sounds, instruments, and repertoire of central and southern Italy. In doing so, they emphasize the points of contact between the various musical traditions that connect this sea.
Through the use of traditional instruments—zampogna (bagpipes), frame drums, chitarra battente, mandolin, lira (hurdy-gurdy), organetto (diatonic accordion) and marranzana (Sicilian jaw harp) – and above all through their work with vocals, which is the pulsating heart of the project, a vast Mediterranean soundscape opens up.
Each individual musician contributes their own musical background, thus contributing to a lively dialogue between individual experiences and a collective identity.
In addition to pieces from the oral tradition, the orchestra also presents original compositions written especially for the ensemble, shaping a musical language that interweaves memory, experimentation, and contemporary writing.
Before the large ensemble takes the stage, Andrea Piccioni, tamburello master and lecturer at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory, opens the evening with a short solo part and a premiere piece.

In many ways, modern frame drum music is a very lively genre: it draws on ancient traditions, keeps them alive, uses contemporary ideas, breaks with ‘the old’ and sets new standards in terms of sound, technique and composition. Frame drum music is constantly evolving, driven by musicians who are passionate and creative in their dedication to this genre.
For this year's festival theme, SIMPLICITY, the Tamburi Mundi Festival has asked four musicians to create a joint evening exploring the tension between the two poles of ‘composed’ and ‘improvised’. The selection of musicians alone suggests that it will be an evening full of contrasts:
Tajik doira master Khayrullo Dadoboev, with a professional traditional background, who has been working on transforming his instrument into Western music for over a decade; Italian multi-instrumentalist and frame drum expert Francesco Magarò, who combines contemporary ideas and South Indian konnakol on the frame drum; classically trained percussionist and handpan virtuoso Michał Pȩkosz from Poland, known for his subtle playing with great sensitivity, and Belgian Robbe Kieckens, who transfers his years of Black African musical experience to the frame drum and opens up exciting new dimensions.

Mohammad Reza Mortazavi is one of the most extraordinary solo percussionists of our time. The Iranian-born artist has redefined the playing of the traditional Persian hand drums tombak and daf, developing them into a unique, contemporary sound language. With breathtaking virtuosity, utmost precision, and an unmistakable technique, he creates complex rhythmic structures that are hypnotic, physical, and deeply emotional.
Mortazavi began playing the tombak as a child, won national competitions at an early age, and developed numerous new playing techniques throughout his career that are now considered groundbreaking worldwide. His music deliberately transcends cultural and stylistic boundaries: he does not reproduce tradition, but transforms it. Rhythm becomes space, sound becomes movement.
Mortazavi has been living and working in Berlin for many years. His solo performances are intense, trance-like experiences in which he creates polyphonic soundscapes with just one instrument. In doing so, he combines archaic power with contemporary aesthetics and radical artistic freedom.
With albums such as FOCUS (2018), RITME JAAVDANEGI (2019), PRISMA (2022), and most recently NEXUS (2025), Mortazavi has gained international attention.
His releases and live performances have thrilled audiences and critics alike, taking him to the world's most prestigious stages.
Mohammad Reza Mortazavi is an exceptional artist—uncompromising, visionary, and unmistakable.

P.O.P. - Power of Percussion Music, an evening you won't be able to get enough of!
Two fantastic bands from the Popakademie Mannheim talent factory, plus a solo duo percussionist, a Swiss musician who shows that rap and frame drums go very well together, a new voice from Istanbul, and all this with special Tamburi Mundi frame drum guests!
The Arab-German duo EYPA offers more than just music in its performance; they invite you to be together in the here and now. The two musicians combine different cultural and musical influences to create their own indie electronica sound. Their transcultural project contains elements of ambient, Krautrock, and drum‘n’bass. Composition and improvisation merge into a trance, making every live set a truly unique show.
Chiara Kilchling and Emanuel Abanto are a newly formed duo that transforms emotions and passion into sound. Their songs range from dreamy melodies to acoustic folk elements in a cinematic style. Their music always remains raw and honest—an intimate glimpse into the feelings and thoughts on topics that concern them. They are accompanied by two other musicians on piano and bass.
Max Gerwien, winner of the 2024 Frame Drum Award, delivers a breathtaking solo percussion show and joins the various acts of the evening as a drumming guest.
Yaschar Coşkun, a young world percussionist who is currently immersing himself in Swedish music culture, adds powerful accents as a musician.
Students from the percussion class at MH Freiburg bring filigree, concentrated rhythms to the stage.
Valentin de Montmollin brings his own rap songs, which he combines with the earthy sound of the frame drum.
Tuğba Gülyeşil is a unique voice on the Istanbul music scene who deliberately refuses to be pigeonholed.
Power of Percussion Music with young music, a varied program, and infectious danceable grooves!

18:00 "Laugh in Time"
Venue: E-Werk, Foyer, FREE ENTRANCE!
Picaresque soul and rousing rhythms: the new program “Laugh In Time” by the Italian-Spanish-Portuguese trio is not just a concert—it's a performance.
Three multi-instrumentalists tongue-in-cheek bridge the gap between their musical skills and theatrical irony. Look forward to this humorous and lively journey to the roots, where the raw, ancient pulse of Sicilian tambourines meets contemporary vocal experiments and Occitan sounds merge with childhood melodies – reinterpreted through an astute, mischievous lens.
It is a celebration of sound and storytelling that breaks through the “fourth wall” and leads to a rousing finale in which the audience becomes the beating heart of the music.

The Tamburi Mundi Special Gala is a long-standing tradition and the heart of the festival: an entire (musical) cosmos opens up in one instrument! A percussion evening that could hardly be more contrasting, colorful, and diverse in musical terms. It is not only the sheer number and diversity of musicians that make this evening unforgettable, but their palpable dedication to the music and their joint frame drumming.
This year's special evening highlights the facets of “simplicity”:
clarity, focus on the essentials, a raw, unadulterated sound, and the joy that sometimes it doesn't take much to create connections and be content.
The drummers from Spain, Tajikistan, Italy, Poland, Switzerland, Belgium, Turkey, Iran, the USA, and Germany take us on their exploratory journey, accompanied by a pulsating liveliness and joy and a “simple” intimacy in their playing.
The evening and the atmosphere are difficult to put into words, but one thing is certain: there will be more musicians on stage than originally announced here...

Heartbeat and breath are the pulse of our lives. Drums and singing are their musical echo.
Six international musicians will take to the stage at the E-Werk for the closing concert and explore this ancient connection.
Turkish singer Tuğba Gülyeşil is a guest at Tamburi Mundi for the first time. The musician from Istanbul cheerfully refuses to be pigeonholed and presents her songs, which bear witness to the traveling “lovers” known as Âşık, who followed a centuries-old tradition of singing storytellers.
Kasia Kadłubowska from Poland enjoys the exciting balance between contemporary music, tribal pop, and traditional folk music from Central and Eastern Europe. With mallets on the vibraphone and a great love for frame drum music, she is pursuing her own musical path. Sara Fotros, an Iranian musician from London, performs powerful percussion on the Persian-Kurdish frame drum Daf. Gesine Bänfer from Freiburg is at home in both early music and folk music with “wind and strings.” Isabel Martín from Spain traces the roots of Mediterranean music cultures in her singing and Iberian frame drum pandero cuadrado. Malika Coşkun sets her own percussive accents as a young voice.
On the last evening of the festival, the musicians will let us experience the uniqueness of their own music, constantly forming new connections and celebrating with us the pulsating emotional intensity of “Drums and Voices.”
