Castanets with Lorenzo D`Erasmo

This workshop will also take place on 04.04. It is possible to attend only one of the two workshops or both.
Lecturer: Lorenzo D`Erasmo (Italy)
Instruments: castanets
Sufficient castanets (made by Italian instrument makers) will be available for the course. The instrument makers also offer the castanets for sale afterwards.
Course Content:

Lorenzo D'Erasmo has been working with a wide variety of castanets for several years.
His workshop will cover the following topics and content:

  • Presentation and demonstration of various castanets
  • Main techniques and approaches to the instruments
  • Areas of application in frame drum playing
  • Compositions for frame drums and castanets

The workshop participants will learn how they work and take their first steps in playing castanets.
The focus here is on the one hand on the individual musician and on the other hand on playing in an ensemble, i.e. on compositions of works for these instruments.

In ancient times, what is now commonly referred to as castanets was called 'crotala' (family of idiophones/self-sounding instruments made of wood or other material). Today, this type of instrument can be divided into two main forms:
- Rectangular shape: rarely connected by a string, made of different materials (wood, bone, stone, metal)
- Round (or similar) shape, connected by a string, usually made of wood.

The workshop deals with the techniques, types and musical background of the rectangular castanet form.

Course Language: English
Level: Open to all levels!
