19th Tamburi Mundi Festival: April 01-07 CONCERTS at E-WERK, FREIBURG, GERMANY

Tamburi Mundi drums in spring!
After 19 years, the frame drum festival is leaving its traditional summer slot and moving to the week after Easter. For nine days, Freiburg's E-Werk will once again be the hub of the frame drum world and the venue for top-class concerts of very different styles.
"Spring of Rhythms" is the name of the 19th edition of the Freiburg festival under the direction of Murat Coşkun.

The first spring festival in the nineteenth year of Tamburi Mundi opens!
Marco Ambrosini will be a guest at the traditional kick-off with festival director Murat Coşkun. His instrument is the nyckelharpa, the keyed fiddle, a Swedish string instrument with keys. Ambrosini has shaped the playing style and popularity of this stringed instrument like no other and is a recognised expert and sought-after performer worldwide.

Together, the two musicians embark on an enjoyable journey to the chaconnes, the dance music of the Baroque, take excursions into Renaissance music and enter the wide and exciting field of improvisation and mutual inspiration. Both also have their own compositions in their luggage, which they creatively expand and spontaneously complement when playing together.

Murat Coşkun and Marco Ambrosini have known each other for many years through joint musical projects. They are united by their enthusiasm for early music, jazz and world music and their status as border crossers between styles and eras.

In their first joint performance as a duo, the two show themselves to be experts and masters of their instruments and give free rein to their joy of playing.
As a special "encore", they have invited three young musicians to deepen the sound on cello and percussion and herald the festival spring with new duo, trio and tutti formations.

With
Marco Ambrosini - nyckelharpa (keyed fiddle)
Murat Coşkun - frame drum, hang, percussion, voice

Guests:
Beatriz Picas - cello and voice
Malika Coşkun - frame drum
Yaschar Coşkun - frame drum

Anything seems possible at this concert, as two performers par excellence take to the stage and... surprise us!

Inspired by images, colors, objects and emotions, they use their immense wealth of experience and their rich musical knowledge to create spontaneous music. Humorously cheerful, definitely refreshingly different and a unique opportunity to experience two of the most successful frame drumming greats unadulterated directly at their creative work.

Daf (erbane or arbane) is the central frame drum in Kurdish and Persian music. It is adorned with many small rings that make up the special sound when they land on the skin of the drum: powerful, full of energy, its rhythm whips and drives forward.  Singing and drumming always form a unity.

Many rhythms have their own language and convey deep emotions. The Daf knows rhythms full of longing, tells of preserving history and looking to the future. It can accompany dances of joy and songs of mourning. The stringed instruments (long and short-necked lutes) tanbur, bağlama and oud join in and yet do not lose their independent character.

Tamburi Mundi is delighted about this unique encounter between the singer and oud virtuoso Negar Bouban, the London-based percussionist Sara Fotros, Can Hasar with bağlama and Hadi Najafi with tanbur, the daf player Sultan Kara and the Freiburg-based world percussionist Murat Coskun. In three duo formations, they explore the many different facets of a music full of longing.

This evening was originally planned with the participation of master drummer Mohsen Taherzadeh from Isfahan, who unfortunately did not receive a visa for his trip to the Freiburg Frame Drum Festival!

Five percussionists, a cellist and many voices. They come from Italy, Spain, Portugal, Poland and Freiburg and bring their stories with them. A concert evening that tells of a personal view of the frame drum, gets up close and personal with the frame drum, spins threads and explores what is special about their own music, seeks and finds points of contact, celebrates and lets many a loose end flutter.

A concert evening with the southern Italian singer and percussionist Emanuela Lodato, who combines dance, singing and drumming in a powerful and joyful way. Isabel Martín from Spain, at home in traditional Mediterranean and early music and closely connected through years of research with Iberian songs and the frame drum "Pandero Cuadrado". Kasia Kadlubowska from Poland, brilliant on the vibraphone and a subtle storyteller on the percussion. Freiburg musician Karin Fleck, who combines keys and drum skin in a wonderfully imaginative rhythmic way. Beatriz Picas from Portugal with voice and cello, jazzy, free, present and light and airy.
Guest percussionist is Malika Coskun, who celebrated her first birthday at the first Tamburi Mundi Festival 18 years ago... and has been accompanied by the sounds of frame drums ever since.

An integral part of the festival tradition is the Tamburi Mundi "Special" evening with all the festival musicians: A roaring rhythmic celebration on the E-Werk stage!

As always, the focus is on the music that is created by and with the very different frame drums and is rooted in different cultures. Original compositions and arrangements are created especially for Tamburi Mundi: trans-cultural dialogs and unusual musical alliances that are unique to this evening.

Four internationally renowned top percussionists get together and do what they do best and love best: DRUMMING!

Glen Velez (USA), Zohar Fresco (Israel), Andrea Piccioni (Italy) and Murat Coşkun (Germany/Turkey) are already regulars at Tamburi Mundi. But for the first time, they will be joining Tamburi Mundi as a quartet for a 'summit meeting of frame drums': After a successful tour in 2023 in Taiwan with the "Chinese National Orchestra", we are looking forward to their new program "Rhythms of Infinity", specially designed for Tamburi Mundi.

The audience can expect a program full of contrasts between composition and improvisation, a "firework of rhythms and grooves", changing moods create intense and contemplative moments.

As always with Tamburi Mundi, there will be further surprise guests...

About the four musicians:

GLEN VELEZ is not only considered the "Lord of the Frame Drums" because of his four Grammy awards. For many, he is a living legend and has inspired thousands of percussionists worldwide with his playing and revolutionized the frame drum movement like no other.

ZOHAR FRESCO is truly an exceptional percussionist! With his individual, highly creative and multi-faceted playing, the Israeli frame drummer is regarded as the "Virtuoso of Frame Drums".

ANDREA PICCIONI, third in the group, is the "Maestro of Tamburello Total". Hardly anyone masters the most diverse traditions of Italian tambourine playing like him and breathes a modern soul into the ancient instruments.

MURAT COSKUN, the "Dervish of Frame Drums", is a musical ambassador whose projects unite the most diverse cultures worldwide and who draws his inspiration from the tradition of Sufi music.
