Philipp Kurzke (Germany)
Bio
Before he dedicated himself to percussion, he passed through an extensive classical formation. Philipp Kurzke is a studied cellist, pianist, singer and choirmaster. His great love to percussion scoops its deepness out of this broad experience in classical and contemporary music as well as jazz.
With his ensembles The Yankeles, Maja & The Jacks, Matou Noir and Babel Projekt, Philipp Kurzke characterizes a new sound in world music, jazz, pop and classic.
The collaboration and the promotion of the percussionist Murat Coşkun from Freiburg and the International Frame Drum Festival Tamburi Mundi again and again lead to musical encounters with international stars of world music and jazz, like Michel Godard, Zohar Fresco, SISU Percussion Ensemble, Enkhjargal Dandarvaanchig, Abbos Kosimov, Bettina Castaño and many other musicians.
The style of Philipp Kurzke is shaped by the intense occupation with Latin American folk music, samba, salsa, son and cumbia. But also less known styles like the chacarera und zamba (Argentina), joropo (Venezuela), or the Peruvian styles festejo and landó clearly left their traces in Philipp Kurzkes work.
In practicing the frame drum, the Oriental drumming culture found its way in Kurzkes musical work as another special field.
2017 he was awarded the „Frame Drum Award“ of the Tamburi Mundi Festival.
Philipp Kurzke is lecturer at the Tamburi Mundi International Frame Drum Festival, lecturer in Oriental percussion and cajón at the Musikwerkstatt Basel and also lecturer in the four year schooling „Frame Drum Academy„. In 2011, he has founded the Freiburger Rahmentrommelgruppe as a continuous course offer for frame drums.
