In this course we will primarily drum in lap style. The focus is on ‘Independence’: the coordination with voice/ feet/ drum offers a new dimension. In particular, the independence of the right and left hand opens up flexibility and many new options and groove ideas that traditional playing does not offer. From simple beat/offbeat figures (also with brushes) to ostinati grooves, we will explore many possibilities.
We will also play on two frame drums and learn new ways of playing (including the ‘flapping technique’).
Certain techniques and exercises will be shown to make it easy to learn and internalise this style of playing.
