On Friday, the 2rd of August from 9.30-11 am., a joint performance of all the workshop groups will take place.

FREE HAND STYLE, SOLKATTU & IMPROVISING

In this workshop series, we will dive deep into learning the frame drum “free hand style.”

What is the Free Hand Style:

The free hand style is a style of playing the frame drums where your hands are in a “free” - position, allowing you to play equally with both hands.

Holding Styles:
To play in the free hand style,  can hold the drum between your legs OR place it on a stand.
Techniques:
The are MANY playing techniques that can be explored in this style!
You can apply the techniques learned to ANY type of hand percussion.


What is Solkattu?
Solkattu is the art of Vocal Percussion from South India.
It is a great “ tool” for all types musicians to learn because it can help musicians understand and improvise easily in various meters.   Ever wanted to learn how to easily improvise in 13? Learn Solkattu!

What You Will Learn:

1 - Fluidity in Intermediate Playing Strokes in the Free Hand Style, to include such techniques as:

- Rolls

- Snaps

- Paradiddles

- North Indian Tabla Phrasing

2 – Improvising using Solkuttu Basics

3 - Learn how to apply Solkattu phrasing into your playing

4 – Learn how to easily improvise in various meters.

5 – Learn fun (yet challenging) Drum compositions, traditional rhythms and theme & variation grooves to help further your playing skills.

Pre-requisite:
Complete beginners to the Free Hand style are fine, but please make sure you have at least 6 months to a year of frame drum instruction as Marla will be teaching somewhat complex rhythmic concepts.

DRUM RECOMMENDATIION FOR WORKSHOP:
* Medium or larger size drum (“18– 22” )


*of course, if you have a smaller drum,  please bring that, we can make anything groove!
Language of instruction:

English

Level: intermediate = good precognition and a solid experience in frame drum playing. Beating techniques and a good rhythmical practise should be existing.

 

Please note:

  • THIS YEAR AGAIN: ADDITIONAL WORKSHOPS IN THE AFTERNOON
    The Frame Drum Academy offers one or two days workshops with various lecturers, that can be booked additionally. The courses take place from 15-18.00 or 16.30-18.00 pm. The schedule of the extra workshops is aligned to the other courses, which might be relevant for the participants of the 2, 5 or 7 days courses, in order to enable them to join these workshops after their regular course program. Even though, these extra workshops can also be booked separately and independently from the festival program.
