Rolf Wagels

Has been playing since 1993 and is considered one of the best bodhrán players in Europe. He has been giving workshops all over Germany since 1996, was a member of Germany's leading Irish folk band Cara, and a founding member of Steampacket and DeReelium. In Germany and Ireland he has played as a guest or studio musician with many of the great musicians of Irish folk (More Maids, An Tor, Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh (Altan), Kevin Crawford (Lunasa), Conor Byrne, Jens Kommnick & Siobhan Kennedy etc.). With Cara he has toured the USA once or twice a year for several weeks since 2007, thrilling audiences at several major festivals (including Milwaukee Irish Fest, Kansas City Irish Fest, Chicago Celtic Fest and Albany Irish Festival). His band Cara was named "Top Group 2010" and "Best New Irish Artist 2009" at the Irish Music Awards and captured the prestigious "Freiburger Leiter" award in 2018. He was also featured in Irish television station TG4's documentary on bodhran maker Seamus O'Kane and was invited to the prestigious Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester to present the bodhrán in a workshop and well-attended lecture. As the first "foreign" bodhrán teacher, he has been teaching every year since 2005 at the largest bodhrán summerschool "Craiceann" on the Aran Islands in Ireland.
