Opening-concert- Samul Nori Ensemble Noreum Machi from Korea
Aula, St. Ursula Gymnasiums, Eisenbahnstr. 43, Freiburg
Noreu Machi is currently the leading group in the art of Korean drums.
Samul Nori (four instruments) is based upon the traditional Korean percussion music of farmers. It is powerful, spiritual music whose sense reunites human beings and nature with ceremonies and feasts. The present-day stage-music, which also comprises of spectacular, daring leap-dancing by the drummers has developed from this origin. A frame drum which looks like a tennis racket, is also integrated into the dances: the Sodo.
Four instruments are played, which stands for the four elements of nature and become connected through the music from a Confucianistic/ Shamanic idea:
Kwänggari - a small, piercing gong. It drives the other instruments as a symbol for lightning.
Tschanggo - an hourglass-formed, double-skinned drum; it is a solo-instrument that is beaten with two sticks in a highly, masterful and acrobatic way. It is regarded as the rain-instrument.
Jing - a flat bass gong and thousand year old, pan-asiatic instrument with a deep, ascending sound - it embodies the wind.
Buk - the bass drum posseses a continuous, powerful pulse.
